My SOTA Journey
I started my SOTA journey in 2013 while stationed in Hawaii. With the diligent help from K6EL, N7UN, and many others from the SOTA management team, I found myself in the right spot at the right time. With their help, we launched the KH6 SOTA association in the fall of 2013. Elliot, K6EL, was on O’ahu with me for the kickoff, and we successfully activated two separate summits, putting the first SOTA and Summit-to-Summit QSOs in the log. I currently act as the Association Manager for KH6. If you have any questions about activating in KH6 or SOTA in general, feel free to send me an email.
The next eight years I brought SOTA with me as my assignments took me to Korea, Colorado, and Utah, before we settled in Montana in 2020. This pairing of hiking, mountain seeking, and ham radio checked many boxes I was looking for in a hobby, resulting in a lot of fun along the way and allowing me to see places I would never have otherwise visited. Most importantly, I’ve truly come to cherish the many friendships I’ve made in the close-knit SOTA community.
Whether you are a mountain seeker or a chaser of the “Goats”, there is much FUN to be had in this niche of the ham radio endeavor. If you have not checked it out I encourage you to do so.
